Green Bay Electrician License: Classes and Exam Site

Green Bay is the city whose own FAQ sounds like it issues an electrical license. Its permit application settles the question in one line, and the answer is the state credential. The apprenticeship here publishes more paid classroom hours than most of the state.

The wording that confuses people

Green Bay's FAQ says: "New residences, work on electrical services, and all other wiring in the City must be done by an electrical contractor licensed in Green Bay." Read on its own, that sounds like a city license.

The Licensed Contractor Electrical Permit Application settles it. The form asks for a "State of WI Electrical Contractor Certification #" and a "WI Master Certification #." Those are DSPS credentials, not city ones.

The same FAQ carries the homeowner rule: "The owner of an existing single-family dwelling where they reside may obtain an electrical permit for wiring in that dwelling," and the city publishes a separate homeowners permit application for it.

The city's permit guides, forms and fees page carries no city electrical contractor license, registration or fee. Its wider licenses page failed to load for us, so the full Green Bay list is unconfirmed.

The Northeast Wisconsin committee

The Northeast Wisconsin Area Electrical Joint Apprenticeship Committee is at 2970 Greenbrier Road, Green Bay, WI 54311. Its coverage runs across Brown, Door, Kewaunee and Oconto Counties, most of Manitowoc County, portions of Marinette, Menominee and Shawano Counties, and three Michigan townships.

The Electrical (Construction) program is five years with a minimum of 8,000 hours on the job, a minimum of 720 paid classroom hours and a minimum of 200 hours of unpaid instruction. That 720 hour paid figure is higher than the Madison, Kenosha and Racine committees publish and lower than Appleton's.

A Telecommunications (Voice, Data, Video) Installer-Technician program runs three years with a minimum of 4,800 hours on the job and a minimum of 432 paid classroom hours.

Entry, quoted: "Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age"; "High School Graduate or have attained a General Equivalency Diploma"; "Must have completed one (1) full year of high school Algebra with a passing grade of 'C'"; official transcripts; and established norms on the "NJATC Apprentice Selection Test Battery." Applications for the construction program are accepted year round, and no application fee is published.

Northeast Wisconsin Technical College

NWTC delivers the Construction Electrician apprenticeship, program code 504132, over five years. Related instruction is "720 Paid-Related Instruction, (Day School) with additional night school classes as determined by the Committee," alongside "not less than 8,000 on-the-job training (OJT) hours."

The campus is at 2740 West Mason St, Green Bay, WI 54303. Entry is a high school graduate or GED, at least 18 years old, or 17 if a high school graduate; a valid driver's license; a completed application form for the electrical industry; an industry test; and an interview with the joint apprenticeship committee.

Applications go to IBEW Local 158 at 2970 Greenbrier Rd rather than to the college, which is the same address as the committee.

NWTC also lists a Construction Electrician-Electricity technical diploma, an Industrial Electrician apprenticeship, an Electric Line Worker apprenticeship and a Construction Management: Electricity associate degree. We did not open those pages, so we are not printing credits or entry rules for them.

Where a Green Bay candidate sits the exam

The Pearson VUE city on the DSPS list here is Ashwaubenon, which is the Green Bay suburb.

DSPS runs no 2026 sitting of its own in Green Bay. Its five venues are Pewaukee, Appleton, Deforest, Eau Claire and Weston, and the Appleton dates are January 13 to 14, March 24 to 25, May 5 to 6, July 28 to 29, September 22 to 23 and November 24 to 25.

Whichever you choose, choose carefully. Once the Pearson exam location is selected, DSPS says you cannot revert to a DSPS exam location.

Your next move in Green Bay

Starting out, get the registered electrician enrollment, then apply to the committee at 2970 Greenbrier Road. Applications are taken year round, so there is no window to miss.

Already working, count your hours. The journeyman grade takes 8,000 hours over at least 48 months, and the industrial journeyman grade takes five years at 1,000 hours a year if your work sits inside one employer's plant.

Before a job, check the company on the state license search. Green Bay's permit form is going to ask for those numbers anyway.
