Waukesha Electrician License: Classes and Exam Site

Waukesha has no apprenticeship committee of its own, because the Milwaukee committee covers the county. What it does have is a technical college running the non-union program and a DSPS exam venue on the published 2026 calendar.

The license, and a city page that says nothing about it

The credential is the DSPS one, under Wis. Stat. 101.862.

The City of Waukesha inspections page describes electrical inspections scheduled online through eTrackit, names inspector Peter Lenti and gives Building Inspection at 262-524-3533. It says nothing about electrical contractor licensing, credentials or code adoption.

So this page will not tell you that Waukesha has no local rule. It will tell you that the city page does not describe one, which is a different and more honest statement. If it matters to a job, ring the number above and ask.

The apprenticeship jurisdiction is Milwaukee

Waukesha County sits inside the Milwaukee Inside apprenticeship jurisdiction. The Milwaukee committee's own packet names "Milwaukee, Waukesha, Washington, and Ozaukee counties."

So a Waukesha applicant for the union route applies to the Milwaukee Electrical Training Institute at 6300 W. Layton Avenue, Greenfield, sponsored by IBEW Local 494 and the NECA Milwaukee Chapter. The Milwaukee page carries the entry list, the hours and the fee, with the 2021 figures labelled as such.

IBEW Local 494 also runs a separate "Kettle Moraine CW/CE Training Program" with its own information packet, alongside its Milwaukee CW/CE program, the Sound and Communication program and the Residential program.

Waukesha County Technical College

WCTC runs the Electrician (ABC) Apprenticeship, program code 50-413-9, credential type "Apprenticeship (ABC - Associated Builders and Contractors)," worth 16 credits.

Entry as printed: core course grades of C or higher; a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above; completion of the ABC application packet and qualifying test; and securing employment with an ABC approved employer. The sponsoring organization is "Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC) of Wisconsin, 5330 Wall Street, Madison, WI 53718."

The curriculum covers AC and DC theory, electrical codes, motor applications and blueprint reading. The college also prints a licensure statement worth quoting: "This WCTC program prepares students to obtain the required licensure to be employed/practice in the state of Wisconsin. The College does not guarantee its curriculum matches the requirements for preparation, examinations, or licensure for other states."

WCTC lists other electrical programs, including an Electrical and Instrumentation Apprenticeship, an Industrial Electrician Apprenticeship and an Electricity program. We did not open those pages, so nothing about their credits or entry rules appears here.

The exam venue, and where the college actually is

DSPS runs its own sittings at the Ingleside Hotel, 2810 Golf Road, Pewaukee, WI 53072. The 2026 dates are January 27 to 28, March 10 to 11, May 12 to 13, July 14 to 15, September 1 to 2 and November 10 to 11.

Pewaukee is also where the classroom is. ABC of Wisconsin names "WCTC: Pewaukee" as one of its related instruction sites, which is the WCTC main campus location rather than the city of Waukesha.

Brookfield is one of the six Pearson VUE cities DSPS names, alongside Eau Claire, Madison, Kenosha, Ashwaubenon and Milwaukee. Waukesha itself is not on either list.

Your next move in Waukesha

Starting out, take the registered electrician enrollment so your first day is legal. Then pick a route: the Milwaukee committee for the union programs, or an ABC approved employer plus WCTC for the non-union one.

Already qualified, book against the Pewaukee dates and count back 30 days for the application, or choose a Pearson center and accept that the choice is final.

Either way, read which code edition the exam uses first. A September sitting and an October sitting may not use the same book.

The DSPS exam pages still name the 2017 National Electrical Code, DSPS expects its exam updates to be completed by 1 October 2026, and the trade press reports the questions changing from that date. The field code, SPS 316, went to the 2023 edition on 1 September 2026, so for one month the book you work to and the book you test on are different.
